The WWE pay-per-view schedule continues on Sunday during the empty-arena coronavirus pandemic era as Backlash streams live on the WWE Network from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. Generally serving as a staple event on the PPV calendar, Backlash is making its way back to the schedule after a one-year hiatus after WWE replaced it with the Super ShowDown event in Saudi Arabia in June 2019.

Plenty of notable matches are on tap for the latest PPV offering, with the card being headlined by a WWE championship match featuring Drew McIntyre putting his title on the line against his latest formidable challenger, Bobby Lashley. Meanwhile, universal champion Braun Strowman faces the daunting task of needing to dispatch of two challengers in order to retain his title and Edge and Randy Orton will run it back on the heels of their brutal WrestleMania 36 showdown — this time in a contest that’s taken on the branding of potentially being the “greatest wrestling match ever.”

WWE Backlash will begin at 7 p.m. ET and stream live on the WWE Network, with the kickoff show leading us in one hour prior at 6 p.m. Let’s take a look at the matches we know will be going down at Backlash as well as predict a few contests that could thrown in as last-minute additions to the card. 

WWE Backlash 2020 matches

WWE Championship — Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Bobby Lashley: Lashley has seemingly ditched Lana in favor of MVP, and the results have been impressive. On the May 18 edition of Raw, Lashley and MVP announced their sights were set on the champion. WWE quickly made the match official for Backlash, and fans are in for a bruising affair.

Universal Championship — Braun Strowman (c) vs. The Miz & John Morrison: Coming out of Money in the Bank, the assumption was that Strowman would be staring down a date with “The Fiend” at Backlash on the heels of defeating Bray Wyatt. Instead, Strowman found the former multi-time tag team champions getting into his business, and this has led to a handicap match with the universal title on the line at the next PPV. 

Raw Women’s Championship — Asuka (c) vs. Nia Jax: After Asuka won Money in the Bank and it turned out she hadn’t won a future title shot but the title itself, Jax began to stalk. A triple threat No. 1 contender’s match was held on Raw featuring Jax, NXT women’s champion Charlotte Flair and Natalya, with Jax emerging victorious to earn the title shot at Backlash. 

“Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” — Edge vs. Randy Orton: In the pandemic bizarro world of WWE, the gimmick match happened first between Edge and Orton, with Edge winning a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania. In the fallout, Orton then challenged Edge to a match he was sure he could win: a straight-up wrestling match. The challenge shook Edge, but on the May 18 edition of Raw, he accepted and the two are now on a collision course for a basic, one-on-one singles bout.

Women’s Tag Team Championship — Bayley & Sasha Banks (c) vs. Nikki Cross & Alexa Bliss vs. The IIconics: Banks and Bayley managed to win the titles from Cross and Bliss on the June 5 edition of SmackDown. The win kicked off their second reign as champions and further built on the cracks showing between the best friends with Banks having to save the team after Bayley attempted to steal the glory. The IIconics returned to action in May, immediately challenging then-champs Cross and Bliss and picking up a non-title win. In the title match that followed, a mid-match temper tantrum led to a disqualification.

United States Championship — Apollo Crews (c) vs. Andrade: The rivalry between these two men will be renewed at Backlash. Andrade took Crews out of Money in the Bank, injuring his knee in a United States title match in the lead to the pay-per-view. Crews would come back to win the belt off Andrade, winning a major championship for the first time during his WWE run. Andrade earned a shot to get his title back by winning a triple threat match against Angel Garza and Kevin Owens on the June 8 edition of Raw.

Sheamus vs. Jeff Hardy: This feud took a wild turn with Sheamus setting up Jeff Hardy to make it look as if he was not only driving under the influence but took out Elias with the car as well. This heated rivalry will reach the next stage now with the two set to meet one-on-one at Backlash. 

Raw Tag Team Championship — The Street Profits (c) vs. The Viking Raiders: This has become a comedy angle based around the Raiders’ claims that they can do anything better than the Profits. While the angle hasn’t exactly delivered the goods on weekly TV, a PPV showdown between the teams should be entertaining. This was not announced until Sunday afternoon.
