Whyte takes legal action against WBC to enforce title shot

Heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte is apparently fed up with the WBC and all the new rumors that Tyson Fury has reached an agreement to twice face Anthony Joshua — all while he continues to wait for his mandatory title shot which is supposedly due to him by February 2021.

But with Tyson Fury expected to fight Deontay Wilder at the end of the year and Fury’s promoter, Bob Arum, saying he would lobby the sanctioning body to push back Fury’s mandatory defense, Whyte is taking legal steps to ensure he gets his date.

Talking to Sky Sports, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman acknowledges that Whyte has taken legal action, but refuses to elaborate upon advice from his counsel.

“There is a procedure with regards to the date of the mandatory in the heavyweight division. Upon direct advice of WBC legal counsel I am not in position to discuss any further.”

Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn, who promotes Whyte, says that despite the Fury-Joshua agreement Whyte should still be able to squeeze in his mandatory shot against Fury at the top of 2021 before Fury and Joshua would presumably hold an undisputed title unification in the summer of next year.

Both Whyte and Hearn have expressed that it is important for Whyte to get his world title shot, and for his part Whyte has said he’s not putting up with WBC shenanigans any longer. Clearly this legal action he’s taken is indicative of that sentiment.
