Rockstar Games has officially announced that its beloved 2010 western action game Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare expansion are headed to additional platforms. The game will be available next week on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, Rockstar has confirmed. It will also be playable on PS5 through backwards compatibility.

Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare are already available on Xbox platforms, including Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility.

Red Dead Redemption releases digitally for Switch and PS4 on August 17 for $50. A physical edition is set for release on October 13, Rockstar said on the Red Dead Redemption website.

This is a port with a number of touch-ups. But it’s not a full-blown remaster or remake. In terms of what’s new, there is support for additional languages and Trophy support on PlayStation. There is no online support in this re-release. The languages now supported include Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Latin American Spanish.

Double Eleven Studios, which worked on Fallout 76, Minecraft Dungeons, Crackdown 3, and Limbo, is developing Red Dead Redemption for Switch and PS4.

The announcement of Red Dead Redemption’s release on Switch and PS4 comes just a day before Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two is due to report earnings on August 8. In previous earnings announcements, Take-Two management said it planned to release “two new iterations of previously released titles,” with many believing that a Red Dead Redemption re-release could be one of them. Well, that’s now official. As for the other one? It could be the rumored Borderlands collection.

Red Dead Redemption was originally released in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PS3. The game was playable on PS4 via PlayStation Now streaming, but it was removed in October 2022, meaning PS4 owners have had no way to play it since then. On Xbox, the game is playable on Xbox One and Series X|S via backwards compatibility.

Red Dead Redemption has never been available on Nintendo Switch, however, until now.

A sequel, Red Dead Redemption II, was released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Both the original Red Dead and its sequel are also available on PC.

Rockstar Games is working on the next Grand Theft Auto game right now, and some people believe it could be released as soon as 2024.
